Local groups are the real winners from Glencore's community funding
We believe the communities that support our operations should benefit from our activities. That's why our Community Assistance Program supports grassroots organisations, community events and initiatives that improve the liveability of our communities.
We're proud to support these valuable initiatives within Mount Isa, Cloncurry and Townsville to make our communities vibrant places to live.
Cloncurry Beat the Heat Festival
Our Ernest Henry Mining operation sponsored Cloncurry's annual Beat the Heat festival from 13 – 15 September. The festival was an array of entertaining events taking place such as a street party, races and markets.
There was a mine cart race at the Friday night street party – which we won! The race was a mini Stockman's Challenge with participants running in mine carts completing challenges like eating a curry, cracking a whip and branding a 'cow'. All in all the festival showcased some typical north west Queensland fun!
Cloncurry Community Christmas party
The Christmas Festival is Cloncurry's last major community event for the year taking place on 29 November. This year you can expect carols by candlelight, a community BBQ, talent quest and markets. We're proud to once again sponsor this event spreading some Christmas cheer in Cloncurry.
Sisters of the North
Sisters of the North in conjunction with Graziher are hosting a unique one-off event for women in North West Queensland on 30 November to help build resilience in the aftermath of the 2019 floods. The event aims to improve social and emotional wellbeing in the community whilst inspiring and engaging women.
We're proud to sponsor this event, which encourages connectivity and helps people to deal with the emotional, physical and mental health consequences of these trying times.
Cloncurry Gun Club
The Cloncurry Gun Club will receive funding to purchase a stainless steel roaster to be used on shoot days and by the School of the Air program when they host their week-long get together at the club. This means the Gun Club will increase their capacity to host events that have a positive social and economic benefit on our community.
2019 Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic
As the Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic celebrates its 20th birthday in 2019, Mount Isa Mines is once again a major sponsor of the fishing classic, which is one of the region's key recreational events, attracting around 350 competitors and 2,000 spectators.
Held from 25 – 27 October at Lake Moondarra, keen fishing men and women and campers gather to enjoy a weekend of fishing, yabby races, live entertainment, a dragon boat regatta and a fireworks display.
Apex Rock Pop Mime Show
We continue our long-term support for the annual Apex Rock Pop Mime Show, which is one of the North West's largest artistic, live performance events drawing thousands of spectators to watch schools mime and dance to express their creativity.
School students travel from as far as Richmond and Winton to perform in the Rock Pop Mime Show on 18 October and months of hard work from students, teachers and parents culminate in the spectacular show.
2019 Northern Outback Business Awards
We're a sponsor of the 2019 Northern Outback Business Awards, hosted by Commerce North West on 9 November, to recognise excellence and innovation in business and outstanding contributions to the growth of our economy.
James Cook University
Our Townsville operations continue their support for education by sponsoring the Glencore Prizes in Engineering and Science and as a contributor to James Cook University Engineering Department's CN Barton Medal award evening to be held on 31 October.
Supporting our neighbourhood schools
Each year Glencore supports the awards nights at neighbouring schools. Our contributions assist in purchasing book prizes for students to acknowledge their achievements. Awards nights will be held during October and November this year.
